Director Francis Lawrence has reconnected with his “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence for a dark espionage thriller about a Soviet spy ring called ‘sparrows.’ These ‘sparrows’ are female spies trained to kill and seduce with the same proficiency. At the centre is J-Law as Dominika, a sparrow with a conscience. This iron curtain game of cat and mouse echoes Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow flashbacks in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” except with a more overt carnal bent. In the brief but tantalising trailer you see a cold certainty that she’s about to kill written all over J-Law’s face. With a terrific cast including Joel Edgerton, Charlotte Rampling (both seen in the teaser trailer), Matthias SchoenaertsJeremy Irons and Mary- Louise Parker this looks like one that you’re going to need to put on your radar.
When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.
