About five years ago, I made a great decision. As I closed the door on an amazing spring board of movie radio/podcast apprenticeship with veteran Dale Sinden on 2UE’s THAT MOVIE SHOW Podcast; I finally knew the podcast that I wanted to make.
I reached out to my amazing and relatively new friend at that time; the infinitely talented Maria Lewis. I said we should partner up for a movie podcast that replicated the ridiculousness of our chats before and after screenings. I wanted insights, passion, silliness, bad impressions and on occasion bursting into song. Pod Save Our Screen was born and the movie quote infused Daft Punk theme song blazed. Our first episode was an appreciation of “The Ghost and the Darkness” which was titled “Lions Eating the Shit Out of People.” Thus began an incredible run of shows where those unfiltered conversations between Maria and I were captured in all their glory. The podcast medium isn’t one that you often hear people say they’re proud of, but that early run of peak #PodSOS may be some of the best stuff that I've been a part of.
There are the big highlights like live Podcasts for Dendy Cult Classics that included a screening of “Alien” with concept artist Ron Cobb along for a Q&A, Ghostbusters screenings with ‘Marshmallow Man” ‘onezees’ and Maria applying eye-liner, and lending me a pair of tights (and socks) to step into the role of David Bowie’s Goblin King for the “Labyrinth.”
There was our live podcast at the Sydney Film Festival; who for two people scolded on national TV by David and Margaret for laughing too loudly at “Olympus Has Fallen”; felt like a warm embrace.
However, my favourite podcast was our Roger Ebert eulogy. It was short, heartfelt and so damned REAL.
I cannot thank my best friend Maria enough for her time and commitment to making this podcast alongside me. Thank you so much to guests and big supporters of the show; you know who you are. Thank you to all those folks who attended the live shows.
Pod Save Our Screen #88 was the last episode to air. In October 2017, Maria and I will join forces one final time at the mic for a double episode finale, taking the total to #90. In the meantime, if you liked the show and you want to feature in our final episodes, send a voice memo to firstname.lastname@example.org
