Yesterday, (Saturday 5:30pm at the Heroes and Villains Convention in Penrith, Sydney) I was amongst a grateful few geeks (and keen eyed security) for the Australian premiere of Item 47. '47 is the first Marvel filmic 'one-shot' (short self contained story) that kicks off Phase 2 of Marvel's cinematic conquest. In the wake of the battle of New York, Marvel's "Bonnie and Clyde" Claire (Lizzy Caplan) and Benny (Jesse Bradford) come across some of the Chitauri technology that they're able to activate. Instead of turning it over to the S.H.I.E.L.D authorities they decide that they should use the technology to go on a crime spree. Agent Blake (Titus Welliver) dispatches Agent Jasper Sitwell (Maximiliano Hernandez) to recover 'Item 47'.
It's a fun little tidbit that's as Honey Bunny and Pumpkin (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer from Pulp Fiction) as Marvel can introduce to their universe. It's got great feature production quality and good actors involved. It's fun to see in the wake of the Battle for New york that there are people (understandably) a little more nihilistic. What it hints at is all the more tantalising:
1. We may have just been introduced to Coulson's successor, 2. S.H.I.E.L.D may not have learnt their lesson re: Reverse engineering Alien technology and the consequences.
The very fact that we're able to discuss a filmic 'One-Shot' is an affirmation of the simple genius of allowing a creative engine like Marvel to control their legacy in this increasingly 'trans-media' environment. I'm hoping (and predicting) that these 'One-Shots' are going to start appearing on not only future Blu ray releases and potentially as pre-show bonuses to forecast story developments and introduce ancillary characters for Phase 2 and beyond.
Now we're assuming that a hell of a lot of you are going to be purchasing The Avengers on Blu Ray (out in Australia Wednesday 29th of September 2012) so to coincide with the release we'll (Cam Williams and I) be having an open discussion re: those potential plot points. Sufficed to say it's an essential purchase on DVD/Blu for all film geeks - especially those comic book geeks.
The Avengers is out on DVD/Blu Ray in Australia and New Zealand on Wednesday the 29th of August 2012.
Directed by: Louis D'Esposito Written by: Eric Pearson Starring: Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Bradford, Titus Welliver, Maximiliano Hernandez
