Nerd God Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods (Cabin) almost single-handedly rejuvenated the horror genre & along the way found time to pay homage to some of our ghoulish favourites. To say much about Cabin is hard to do without throwing spoilers out there; but I can say that Whedon and Goddard have crafted a brilliant, unique thrill ride with a wink-wink sense of humour that is well served by a talented cast (Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Jesse Williams, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz). This is a very dark picture. I imagine deliberately so to create suspense, but the image detail is excellent, with strong close-ups & solid colours. Scream 3 & 4 cinematographer Peter Deming is behind the camera, creating a "murky" sometimes edgeless look that allows the hectic CGI effects to blend seamlessly into the mix,

All in all a quality picture a worthy [rating=4]

AUDIO:

English DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, with English, English SDH & Spanish Subtitles

Even though I listened on a 5.1 system - this soundscape creeps from its humble beginnings to unleashing an unapologetic "Bogart"- esque slap to the face. This is what we want, an expansive, aggressive presentation that delvers spot-on vocals, not so subtle score and low frequency effects that go nuclear (and make your sub go BOOM) especially with finale! The surround field is superb, faultless and delivers on time & with a free garlic bread!

[rating=5] a sentiment my neighbours will unhappily attest to.

FEATURES:

There's a bunch, with highlights being Goddard/Whedon commentary, a making of (spotlighting that Whedon "sense" of humour) and a Wonder-Con Q & A. It also has a sweet lenticular packaging.

[rating=3] and a half stars

SUMMARY:

This is a quality package indeed, it’s only draw-back is that its Region A locked! But if you've got a multi-region blu-ray player then I would have no hesitation in highly recommending this one to you.
